Thank you YouTube
23 September 2024

Thank you YouTube, I was addicted to you but you helped us all. At first it was cool informative stuff and then I started using you for a lot of music and finally some doom scrolling as my preferred form of procrastination.

You saved me and probably many others suffering from a lack of focus late in the evenings. Using the power of ads you made us aware of our habits. Constant interruption and having to click skip now after a random number of seconds really jarred us out of the doom scrolling. Gently nudging us to towards other tasks. Perhaps your plan was to increase your advertising revenue or drive people to your ad free subscription service. I am not sure, all I know is the ads serve to remind me I am wasting my time.

Once I was thinking a subscription to YouTube could replace my Netflix subscription, now I am wanting to get back to my life of focus. Sure I will still frequent you but the days of doom scrolling and mindless content consumption are over, short lived as it was.

I choose focus over distraction.

Yes this is meant in a humorous way, but as my A-level physics teacher used to like saying:

Never a truer word than one spoken in jest.
